As spooky season approaches, we thought it would be a fun way to engage with Halloween traditions by doing an overview and overall rating of some common candies given out on Halloween. In partnership with Eve, Julia and Julia, we would like to introduce our candy rating for 2025!

Eve Collins

Fun-size chocolate bars - 7/10

ree

These chocolates can taste really good, depending on which one you acquire during your quest to scavenge for cavity-inducing food. I’m sure we can all agree that the Snickers and Mars bars taste the best, with M&M’s following closely behind, and finally, Milky Ways in dead last. Overall, it’s a 7/10, because they taste really delicious, but a few types aren’t as good, and the size is very underwhelming.

ree

Insect Suckers - 4/10

Insect Sucker are one of the lollies which are all about appearances, but have nothing much to offer beyond that. Other than its interesting and freaky look about it (I mean, there is literally a scorpion in a lollipop made for children!), there isn't much flavour or personality to it. As a kid these used to freak me out, and I just refused to eat it. Not only that, but they always have been, and especially now, are hard to come across, meaning they are very difficult to find unless you specifically buy them. Overall, it’s a solid 4/10 for me.

Chupa Chups - 7/10

ree

Chupa Chups are a great find when it comes to trick or treating, as they taste great, there are so many different options, they last long, and the flavour doesn’t decrease over time. However, some of the flavours are not looked upon kindly, and the size isn’t always up to par, such as the little ones, which are the most common, being somewhat underwhelming. Overall, I rate it a 7/10.

Strawberry Bon Bons - 6/10

ree

These candies are notorious for being everywhere, yet no one knows what they are called. Often named the granny candies, these never fail to bring a sense of nostalgia with every suck. Bon bons are the type of lolly you either love or hate, with many people loving the sweet and fruity flavour, while others don’t really like it. Overall, I rated it a six, as it isn't necessarily considered a top-tier lollie, but is still a nice treat to snack on whether it's at your grandparents' house, or during Halloween.

Kit Kats - 9/10

Kit Kats are one of those things where you simply cannot go wrong with. No matter melted, cool, crunchy, differently flavoured, or just the original, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a kit kat, especially on halloween. As they say “Have a break, have a kit kat!”

Candy Corn - 5/10

ree

This candy is notorious for its ‘mid’ reputation; some people like it, some people hate it, and there’s often a question as to what it really tastes like. So, after searching many stores, we found and tried it. Candy corn is not a hard lolly, as I certainly expected, and it’s made out of slightly tougher fondant, the sugar paste. As for the flavour, it quite literally tastes like pure sugar. Eating these in moderation isn’t bad, but too many are off-putting. These are a solid 5/10; they aren’t bad, but I probably wouldn’t get it again.

Gummy bears - 8/10

Almost everyone has tried these at some point. The tough, chewy texture is definitely a core childhood memory for me. All of the colours taste slightly different, with no distinct fruit flavour. But, after further research, I have discovered the different flavours for the colours. Red is raspberry, orange is orange, yellow is lemon, green is strawberry, and clear is pineapple. These are an 8/10, as they rarely get sticky in your hands, are a fun little treat to get from trick or treating, and taste overall decent. The chewiness of the bear may be undesirable for some, but it didn’t affect my rating that much.

Skittles - 9/10

ree

The only reason that these are not a 10/10 is because there is no blue, and how are we supposed to taste the rainbow without a blue? Blowing past that, Skittles are definitely one of the top candies to receive while trick-or-treating, from the satisfying initial crunchiness, to the slightly distinguishable flavour while you chew it. These candies are sweet, simple, and very brightly coloured. They taste great, and are great for eating on the go.

ree

M&M’s - 8/10

Need I say more? Crunchy candy shells and simple milk chocolate inside, these will never cease to be an essential in the candy basket. While this may be controversial, M&M’s can be plain at times, and need some additional flavour. Fortunately, M&M’s have heard our calls. From peanut to brownie-filled, there is something for anyone, anytime (unless you don't or can’t eat chocolate!). They deserve a high 8 because they are good and a staple, but are just a bit plain, in my opinion.

ree

Sour Patch Kids - 8/10

Sour Patch Kids are a solid choice of candy, with many flavours, a sour coating, and almost everyone agrees on them. Seriously, bringing a bag of these to yeartime is always a hit. While I would not recommend eating a whole bag in one sitting, they are definitely one of my favourites. The flavours are all easier to tell apart than Skittles, and red is my favourite flavour. These are an 8/10 as they are an all-round crowd pleaser, sure to disappear if you accidentally leave an open bag in the cupboard – but nothing about them stands out individually.

Julia Foong

Nerds Gummy Clusters - 8/10

They’re colourful, fun and every bite feels like a mini sugar explosion! Bring a bag of these anywhere, and you’ll have friends you didn’t know you had. Unlike the majority of snacks, these lolly packets are usually always filled to the top, maximising the amount of candy that you can eat. The only downside? They’re chewy (especially bad if you have braces!), and get stuck in your teeth, no matter how hard you try. Still, they’re easily one of the best candies out there, rainbow, chaotic, and unforgettable.

Fruity Chews - 7/10

ree

These candies are fun to unwrap, as it includes a surprise fun fact inside. They have a variety of flavours and colours, making it fun and interesting for children. However, these candies are annoyingly hard to chew, and can result in lots of pain in your jaw. Unless you're willing to wait for them to soften, I wouldn’t eat them.

ree

Stix - 8/10

Stix come in a bunch of flavours, so there’s pretty much something for everyone. They’ve got that two-layered texture going on, which makes them more interesting than just a plain chewy snack. Seriously, bringing a bag of these to a picnic or party is basically an instant win.. While I wouldn’t recommend trying to eat a whole bag in one sitting, unless you want your teeth stuck together for an hour, they’re definitely one of my favourites. The flavours are easy to tell apart, so you don’t end up guessing what you’re eating, like you do with some other candies.

White Rabbit - 9/10

ree

White Rabbit is a classic for a reason—milky, not too sweet, and oddly satisfying. The rice paper wrapping makes each bite feel like a tiny, edible mystery—do you eat it, chew it, or awkwardly try to swallow it? These are perfect for the Chinese New Year as they reflect the culture, and hoarding them will make you a candy ninja. I’d give them a solid 9/10—they’re creamy, fun to unwrap, and a nice change from the usual sugar rush.

ree

Wizz Fizz - 6/10

Wizz Fizz is a bit of a love-or-hate candy. It’s way too sweet for some, and let’s be real—it gets messy so fast. The little shovel is a fun touch, though it’s mostly just a tool to scoop up sherbet that sticks to everything it touches. The packaging is bright and eye-catching, so it definitely wins points on the aesthetics, but eating it without creating a tiny sugary disaster zone? Good luck. I’d give it a 6/10—it’s entertaining, especially for parties or kids, but the sweetness and messiness hold it back from being a top-tier candy.
