Change

By Nat Hardwick

The sudden change lingers in the air,

The sun’s rays burning into my skin,

With the sun’s blinding glow,

Welcomes the beginning of summer,

With nostalgia in tow.

As the temperature rises,

So does my chest tighten with anticipation,

The feeling of nostalgia hitting me like the humid southernly winds.

Glimpses of trips to the water park and electric thunderstorms,

With each toasty gust of wind,

Memories come one after another.

The sickening feeling of change lays inevitable.

Though every year the summer heat brings back memories,

This year the year of my graduation brings a different feel,

The memories of my childhood and educational career.

Looking back as each memory goes by,

Does the anticipation and fear linger as they whisper in my ear?

Happy and sad,

The good and the bad,

That each memory yields,

Each day passing by in my rearview mirror

Does my graduation loom nearer?

My first day of preschool

My first day of primary school,

My primary school graduation,

The first day of high school,

To the upcoming day of my high school graduation.

As the dreaded day looms closer,

I cannot help but fear what comes next,

As millions of questions and feelings circle in my mind,

The anticipation and excitement of something new,

To the overwhelming anxiety of a future unknown.

Though these feelings lurk in my mind,

The inevitability and unpredictability of the future terrifies me every night,

But from what I have come to realise,

That life is full of change whether happy or sad,

Terrifying or Exciting,

Life is full of the new and the terrifying,

For life would be so dull without the exciting beginnings of

Change.
