The 2019 Oscars has been claimed as the best awards show yet since they began in the late 1920s. The awards night has become one of the biggest nights in the movie industry, and always has something interesting – whether that be the fashion, nominations or controversy. Nevertheless, it is an extremely important night for many of our favourite actors and directors, many of which were lucky enough to be nominated for several different categories this year. Here are all of the winners for this year’s 91st Academy Awards.
For the Best Picture Oscar, Black Panther, BlakkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice were all nominated, but Green Book won the award for this year. Green Book is a film about an acclaimed African-American pianist named Dr Don Shirley, who is about to begin his tour of the South US in 1962. He hires a man called Tony Lip to be his driver and protection. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.
For Actor and Actress in Leading Roles, the nominees were Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) for the Actor award, while Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me) were nominated as Actress in a Leading Role. Rami Malek for his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody won the award. The film itself also won 3 more awards for Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. Olivia Colman also won the award for her character in The Favourite. The film (although it did not win any more awards) was also nominated for Best Picture, Actress in a Supporting Role, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Writing (Original Screenplay) and Production Design.
For the Animated Feature Film Award, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won, while Incredibles 2, Isle of the Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet were all nominated for the Oscar. The award for Cinematography went to the Netflix movie Roma. The film is about Cleo, one of two domestic workers who help Antonio and Sofía take care of their four children in 1970s Mexico City. Complications soon arise when Antonio suddenly runs away with his mistress and Cleo finds out that she's pregnant. When Sofía decides to take the kids on vacation, she invites Cleo for a much-needed getaway to clear her mind and bond with the family. The rest of the nominees were Cold War, The Favourite, Never Look Away and A Star is Born. The film was also nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Best Picture, Production design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Writing (Original Screenplay) and won Oscars in Foreign Language Film and Directing.
The film Black Panther took home many Oscars from the night, winning awards for 3 different categories, breaking Marvel Cinematic history. The record-breaking movie won awards for Costume Design, Music (Original Score) and Production design. It was also nominated in the Music (Original Song) category, with the song 'All the Stars' sung by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Other Oscar Awards included; Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Writing (Original Screenplay), Visual Effects, Short Film (Animated), Short Film (Live Action), Makeup and Hairstyling, Foreign Language Film, Documentary (Feature), Documentary (Short Subject), and Directing. Overall, the night was a complete success – despite Rami Malek falling off the stage after receiving his award – and made an amazing finale for the films and movies of 2018.
