We all know Christmas; it’s the holiday that is at the end of the year, filled with presents, religious ceremonies and fun. But everyone has their differences. We don’t all do the same things for celebrations and holidays. So, what do people really do?
Starting with Christmas Eve, many families get together, exchange gifts and enjoy each other’s company. For food people often have a festive meal – it might include roast meats, seafood and traditional deserts like pudding or pie- yum! Some families also choose to open their Christmas presents during this time, while others wait until Christmas morning. For Christians, attending a midnight mass or a Christmas Eve service is an important part of celebrating the true history of Jesus. Children often leave cookies and milk for Santa and some carrots for the reindeer near the tree. A classic Christmas carol or movie such as Jingle Bells or the Grinch is also part of why Christmas is so special. Some families also have their own traditions. They might decorate their house with fun and festive Christmas lights or see some for themselves, have hot cocoa or take family pictures with Santa. Fun!
Now let’s move on to the real reason you’re reading this - Christmas Day!
Families will wake up earlier than usual and open their presents, enjoying quality time with their family, even ones who aren’t physically there! Some families have a big Christmas meal often with roast turkey, ham, vegetables, pudding, cookies and much more yummy treats! Christians will also attend a Christmas Day church service as if Jesus wasn’t born on this wonderful day, there would be no presents, no Grinch, no Christmas. Families will also listen to the iconic Christmas songs and movies. In the snowy countries (Canada, USA, UK, Ireland) they go play with snow/ice skating and pull Christmas crackers before their meal. However, where we live, people typically go to the beach or have barbecue! The world has so much contrast on Christmas.
It’s amazing what people do to celebrate this day- the biggest event in some countries! What do you do to celebrate Christmas? Do you do some of the things we mentioned, or do you have your own very cool traditions? Whatever it is, we hope you’re excited about Christmas coming up! On Christmas Day, while you’re with a dozen uncles and aunties, or just with your mum and dad, think of all the other things that people are doing that day. You’d be surprised at the number of activities that people do if you think about it!
