The Biggest Conspiracy Theories in the Music Industry

By Katrina Bolger, Isabelle Barnden & Lauren Meaney

Has Taylor Swift been hiding secrets from us all along, or are we digging too deeply for clues that aren’t there? Allegedly Taylor has been using Easter eggs in her work since 2006 which are hidden messages inside Swift’s art. Today we will be exposing some of Taylor's most iconic theorised easter eggs.

Number three is an easter egg from Taylor Swift’s ‘The Man’ music video where Taylor’s character is peeing on a wall of her album titles with a sign that says “If found Return to Taylor Swift” and another sign that says “No Scooters” referring to her enemy Scooter Braun and how he owns the masters to her first 6 albums.

Number two, most recently is in Taylor Swift’s new music video “Lavender Haze” where there is a Mastermind vinyl spotted with the Sagittarius (Taylor’s Zodiac Sign) and Pisces (Swift’s current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn’s Zodiac Sign) constellations on it.

Finally, number one is in the ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ music video which is filled with easter eggs, but one that is not spoken about enough is when Taylor sings “I don’t like your tilted stage” which is a reference to Kanye West’s performance where he sang about Swift without her permission.

Well, that's a wrap on theories of Taylor Swift’s art, and there are plenty more that Swifties have uncovered. However, are they all true?

Will 1D ever get back together?

I still have hope that One Direction will get back together, but how likely is this?

After Harry Styles’ concert in Sydney, he posted a selfie of himself in the gym wearing a black t-shirt adorned with photos of his old band. Shortly after he deleted the photo and stated “I guess some of us have secrets.” Is this a sign of a possible reunion?

There were also rumours that Harry and Niall were collaborating on a song together in lockdown with both members posting pictures with similarities in the background. If this is the case, why haven’t we heard any of this music released? Fans argue that they could be saving the release for the special announcement day. However, realistically this is unlikely to be the case due to the sheer amount of time that passed since lockdown and the individual's other raging successes.

It is a well-known fact that Louis Tomlinson was left completely mortified after the split, but what is his current stance? He was quoted saying in the UK’S ‘The Times’ early this year; “I’d be surprised if we lived out our lives and didn’t have a moment where we had a reunion, or whatever you want to call it. I’d be up for that.”

The conclusion we can draw is that One Direction will reunite at some point, with various members seeing it as a part of their future and reminiscing about the golden days. But this reunion is unlikely to take place in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled for signs that our favourite boy band is back.

Are Beyonce and Jay Z from the Illuminati?

Beyonce is one of the most famous artists of our generation. Her music has been streamed millions of times and her life is followed extensively by fans, haters, but also conspiracists. Today I will be unpacking her biggest controversy; is Beyonce a part of the Illuminati?

What even is the Illuminati? In a historical sense, the Illuminati was a secret organisation founded by a German man named Adam Weishaupt, a professor of law at the University of Ingolstadt. He formed this secret organisation for the purpose of having a safe space for critique, debate and free speech, and a forum to oppose religious influence on society and the abuse of power by the state.

The real Illuminati group only survived a decade, but ever since, conspiracy groups have come up with many different theories trying to prove the Illuminati still exists. Some believe the Illuminati were behind the French Revolution, and more recently, the Illuminati is behind everything that goes on in the world. According to some, they control the world.

How does this dangerous revolutionary group from the 18th century have anything to do with the most iconic artists of our own century? Jay Z, Madonna, Kim K, and even Lindsay Lohan have all been supposedly linked to the Illuminati. But the most common accusation around the Illuminati mess of Hollywood has to do with Beyonce.

There have been many occasions in Beyonce's career where Illuminati accusations were formed.

1. Her music: One of the most circulated theories has to do with her music. Her 2008 hit, ‘Single Ladies’ for instance, doesn’t have any overt signals or pieces of evidence that suggest the Illuminati, but conspiracists believe that if the song is played backwards, messages such as “the world will bow to me” (1:05) can be heard, brainwashing her audience and provoking Illuminati ideals. Take a listen: Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Backwards)

2. Her baby’s name: In 2012, Beyonce gave birth to her daughter, ‘Blue Ivy’. Although fans were mostly thrilled with the name of the child, saying it matched the singer's style perfectly, some conspiracy theorists were sceptical. Why? The name Ivy could be an acronym for ‘Illuminati’s Very Youngest’. Of course, there may be many other reasons for the name, including inspiration from some of Jay Z’s (Beyonce’s husband) albums, or purely because they just liked the sound of the name.

3. Jay Z and RocNation: Jay Z is known not only for being Beyonce’s Husband, but also as a music artist. In his performances, he has been seen multiple times making a hand signal that forms a triangle, supposedly meaning a diamond. This symbol is now very well known to be related to himself and his record label RocNation. But conspiracists believe that this symbol is in fact a symbol proving to fans and other members that he is a part of the Illuminati, and he and his wife are leaders of this cult. This theory was accelerated when Beyonce also flashed this hand signal during her Superbowl halftime show. Was it in support of her husband? Was she showing an image of a diamond in the sky, just like the title of her song? Or is she a high-ranking member of the Illuminati, showing her membership to the world?

Overall, many artists are subject to conspiracy theories. When put into the limelight, every move and word that a celebrity does is analysed deeply, and this can create theories that may be damaging to an artists career, but it is also important to note that these conspiracy theories can also benefit the artist greatly, making publicity around their name and encouraging others to watch their every move. Will any of these conspiracy theories ever come true? Will there be more in the future? We will just have to wait and see.
