Met Gala Review

I have conducted an experiment where I put this article in twice, one with a picture of climate change on the front and the name making climate change cool and the other with a picture of the met gala named “met gala”. I wish to see which gets more views in order to determine whether my hypothesis about our avoidance of climate change for simple pleasures until we realise it is too late is correct.

There is a concept that, “those who do not see the direct consequences of their actions do not care about them.” I see this very evidently in our current lives, particularly with issues like young people tanning increasing their chances of skin cancer and, of course, the effects of climate change. This is why I propose an installation in the centre of Sydney that either detects littering or uses statistical data to predict how much waste is happening in real time, and in response shows the real life, disturbing consequences in the form of fish passing away.

The animation would depict a large (animated) fish tank but then show fish passing away and accumulating. Whilst, yes this is dark, we can no longer avoid the consequences of our actions because it isn’t palatable to look at. Especially those of us who live in a sheltered country, as we are the ones causing climate change but not being affected by it. Those affected by it, the lower economic background countries, are not contributing to it.

Other issues in our world may seem more glamorous, cool, or achievable to make an impact. Sometimes climate action can seem hopeless, and we don’t see the impact, or if our individual contribution makes a significant difference. But we must not let this dishearten us! Let's make climate action cool.
